[Suggestion] Don't show websites of crates in 'events' (15 Replies)

It so just happened that I stashed a crate on a rather personal website, which is mainly visited by friends. My intention was, of course, that one of my friends would find it. However, about 10 seconds later, it was already looted by someone I don't know. Now, of course, it can happen that someone I don't know did visit the site at that particular moment, but I didn't think that likely, so I investigated a bit. As it happens, one can easily view recent events on the PMOG site. On the event page, all events show up -- including who stashed a crate and where. There's even an RSS feed for it. Because of this, it is very easy for a particularly greedy person to have this RSS feed in a RSS-reader (and perhaps even apply some filter so only the 'crate' messages seep through) and loot all newly stashed crates. I think this really breaks the fun. Perhaps crates should be mentioned without the webpage, or make it possible to hide it. Just my 2cts... Replied 11 months ago | Permalink |

The only thing visible on the events page is the toplevel domain. If you do not want event page surfers to steal your crates, putting them somewhere besides the front page of a website will make it harder. That idea about rss filters is very slick, I'm pretty sure you've just inspired some of the people you dislike ;) Replied 11 months ago | Permalink |

Finding a crate that has been hidden is definitely more fun then one that pops up on a main page. Replied 11 months ago | Permalink |

I usually avoid top level domains when I am dropping crates. If someone really wants to watch the events page, let them. If they go to a website I want to draw attention to, all the better. They will have to dig if they want to loot the special crate I have stashed there :) I view it like a treasure hunt! All it takes is people not dropping on top level, and everything is 10x more fun! "All it takes is people not dropping on top level, and everything is 10x more fun!" Agreed. This also applies to mines. ;) Replied 11 months ago | Permalink |

I actually want people to see the domain where I stashed a crate - otherwise, in most cases, no one would probably ever find them. ;)

I´m not hiding (most of) my crates anymore. It´s not fun to visit a site and find a crate I put there 2 weeks ago is still here. Replied 11 months ago | Permalink |

Thanks for the feedback people, and sorry for taking my time to reply. I'm a little too busy at times... <quoteblock>The only thing visible on the events page is the toplevel domain.</quoteblock>

...edit: how to quote properly here?! [quote]<quote><q> all don't work...

Not so true, it's the whole domain including subdomain(s). Apparently it doesn't show the page, indeed, so that's a good thing. I use "top-level domain" in the same sense that PMOG does. i.e. you get 2 DP for visiting each "top-level domain" in the game. Technically, the highest domain of maps.google.com is .com Replied 11 months ago | Permalink |

Ah, I see. Then you are correct ;). The TLD is indeed the .com etc, but I interpreted it as 'google.com' (and not 'maps.google.com') in your posting, as it is quite useless to only display the TLD :P. <quoteblock>quotes still won't work for me... I will look it up somewhere...</quoteblock> Replied 11 months ago | Permalink |

The whole point of the toplevel domain is the sense of fun of knowing a crate is stashed on, say, wikipedia.com - and then trying to FIND it. It can also be a sneaky way for some people to raise traffic on their own sies too, by dropping crates there and watching the pmog treasure hunters flock in. Replied 11 months ago | Permalink |

How about you just have a check mark on crates called "show this in events"? Replied 6 months ago | Permalink |

too much work. and since it only shows top-level domain, it's fine. i mean, you'd have to do it for all tools then, not just crates, and i think the devs have more important things to do. mighty mighty necrothread. Replied 6 months ago | Permalink |

Easy fix, lock your crates with a puzzle that only your friends know the answer to. Stash wherever you like Replied 6 months ago | Permalink |

Yeah, we have yet to get creative with watchdogs and ping upgrades like we have with every other tool. Hopefully some genius will create an interesting method... Replied 6 months ago | Permalink |

Better yet, make crate looters more careful when looting your crates by upgrading 'em to Sploding Crates! http://pmog.com/codex/upgrades/e... Top Level works for me just fine.. :) ;) 8-) Replied 6 months ago | Permalink |
