Pmail limits (12 Replies)

I want to set up a competition in the forums, but it all rather depends on how much information etc the pmail system is able to take. I basically want people to give me a list of answers and do it all in one fell swoop. So, is it possible to get, say, 50 lines in a single pmail - or will it fail?

it will fail, you will get nowhere near 50 lines. I dont know exactly but you would be lucky to get 10, I have had lots of messages fail and they weren't what I would call long. Replied 10 months ago | Permalink |

Looking through my Pmail, I have nothing longer than 5 lines...so I think that may be the limit. Replied 10 months ago | Permalink |

Cheers - ok then; any suggestions how I can have people send me a list of answers without them appearing in the forum? I don't want real emails involved, obviously. Replied 10 months ago | Permalink |

Are they more than 1 word answers, the easiset way to test would be to pmail yourself the answers in various formats, like @spikeyboy answer, answer,a longer answer,an even longer answer That way you should be ok, but if you test it youself and it works, you can post the answer format in the forum, or maybe a nice techie will hook you up a response form on a webpage, like someone did for star in Sheep If you cant find anyone who offers to do that for you I will do it for you, I will just have the script email you the response form. They would be one word or a couple of words, so I'll give the self-mailing idea a go. Cheers! Replied 10 months ago | Permalink |

The limit is 500 characters... there isn't any specific reason for this, but I'm going to ask that we put in some kind of check that at least tells you when you've exceeded it. Replied 10 months ago | Permalink |

I've been using the word count function in Open Office...

a nice little countdown from 500 would be cool, like the web texts for SMS Replied 10 months ago | Permalink |

Exactly, salmontickler. I've asked that be put in with all messaging functions for the next release. Replied 10 months ago | Permalink |

I fully support this idea. Writing stories into Pmail is incredibly difficult, the slightest misjudge in character length means the sentence doesn't get sent... and I've noticed sometimes it doesn't tell me it didn't send.
